What drives us to continue the struggle and what pushes us to bring a goal or dream into fruition? That force is motivation.

Firstly, there is a huge difference between desire and motivation. To desire something is to want it, but this feeling is more of a pop-up. To be motivated to accomplish a task, is to be keep going along your journey, no matter what.

Motivation is a process with the first step being activation. Before going into the process, I’m going to give an example that will help you better follow the process. We’ll look at taking a test, because I’m sure everyone loves a clean W (right?).

Activation simply means recognizing what you want to accomplish. You want a grade that won’t kill your class average; good, but not good enough. I can recall so many times when I had a friend who telling themselves, “I think I can! I think I can,” only to get check the grade book and see an unfulfilling five point drop. Yeah, I think what you need is persistence.

As you can guess, persistence is the next component in the process. Now that you’ve realized what you want is a juicy W on the next test, now it’s a matter of striving towards that goal, or as psychologists have put it, persisting. You buy the latest set of flashcards from a credible learning source, you read all of the review books that are necessary, and you religiously read the class text book as if it were the Bible, maybe even a ritual sacrifice to the test taking gods just in case (this doesn’t work, so don’t try it).

The final piece is intensity. Now you seek absolute perfection. Everyone else is aiming for a mediocre score; you, you’re aiming for the best one possible. You read, discuss, practice, inquire, and finally, you achieve that desired score.

Humans are a biological, psychology, but more broadly an existential enigma. Human existence is a mixture of complexity and intricacy and each time I think about what we are I come to the realization that each and every one of us is incredible. My goal is to understand the miracle that is the human mind and what motivates me is my endless longing for answers.

No matter who you are, or what you do, everyone’s main desire in life is to accomplish and conquer their goals.
