On this day in history:

  • 1720: Pirate hunters find Calico Jack Rackham’s flag while prowling Jamaican waters. When Rackham’s ship was attacked, his female crew returned the fight while the men, drunk on rum, waited it out in the hold.
  • 1947: The House Un-American Activities Committee held its first hearings into possible Communist infiltration of the US film industry. Soon after, a career-killing blacklist was drawn up with help from famous informants, leaving Hollywood held by the ‘Red Scare.’
  • 1973: Queen Elizabeth II and Bennelong Aborigine descendant Ben Blakeney were on hand to mark the official opening of the Sydney Opera House.
  • 1977: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s chartered plane ran out of fuel thanks to a faulty engine, leading to it crashing in Mississippi. The band’s singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed, along with three crew member. Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded after the accident, but the surviving members reunited a decade later.
