Here’s a look at what happened today in history:

  • 1889: Montana became the United States’ 41st state after working towards statehood since the early 1860s.
  • 1939: On the 16th anniversary of the failed Beer Hall Putsch coup attempt, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was scheduled to speak when a bomb detonated in the hall. However, Hitler and other Nazi leadership left the site minutes before the explosion.
  • 1960: John F. Kennedy beat Richard Nixon to become the youngest person as well as the first Catholic to occupy the presidential office at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • 1971: Led Zeppelin released its fourth studio album, Led Zeppelin IV. The album became a massive success and features some of the British rock band’s greatest hits including Black DogRock and Roll, and Stairway to Heaven.
