This portrait is painted with oil paint on a white canvas. The artists‘ directions were to pick a photograph that was not off of a magazine. The photograph had to be an unedited pictures because the artist is supposed to study and paint a real face that captures the flaws of the person they are painting. Oil paint is a slow drying paint that consist of  pigment particles suspended in drying oil. Oil paints have longer working times, since you have longer time with oil paints the artist has the flexibility to start painting and then come back the next day to pick up right where they left off. Most famous portraits like the Mona Lisa, The Starry Night, or The Scream were painted with oil based paints. This painting style is for more advanced artists to capture images. According to Danielle Mege, the art teacher at McEachern High School, the artist in her class are instructed not to use black or brown paint. Only when the students make black and brown they are allowed to use these colors. They are recommended with use blues, oranges, reds and yellows for their art work. As you can see in the portraits in the photos.
