Hey, guys. It’s me here. Valentine’s Day is finally here and whether you’re spending it with your hubbie or boo or whatever you want to call it or not, some of you are spending a heart-filled time with a close one. If anyone’s looking, here’s my number—555-555-5555. Just looking for a friend. All jokes aside, I just wanted to understand the intrinsic mechanisms that drive this powerful emotion. What is love?

The specific kind of love I’m talking about is the love one feels when they’ve meet a potential life partner (I’m pretty sure family love is different. I doubt anyone shows the same kind of love they have for their boo to their mom or dad or something…).

Honestly, there is no agreed upon definition of love in psychology, let alone in any field of study. Love seems to be an amalgamation of biological and psychology intricacies, but with something more colloquial, love is just complicated.

One thing that’s been determined, however, are the signals given off during a possible ‘love at first sight’ encounter. Many described the sensation as ‘an electric shock’ or as one person put it, “[He/she] was the only person [they] could see in the room.” Despite the myriad of descriptions, they are connected by some sense of shock.

Luckily, scientists have described the feeling through biology and neurology. Neurologically, there are chemicals fired in our brain that trigger responses throughout the body. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. The most commonly known one is adrenaline and this happens to be apart of the love feeling.

Characterized by sweaty palms, really fast heart rate, and shallow breathing, these are also the same symptoms that typify the fear response.

Alright, remember to buy something nice for your loved one, for example, the carnations that the art club is selling (hint, hint). Love is a special thing, so treasure it, and Happy Valentine’s Day.
