On Monday, Apr. 10 Shaniqua Stephens rushed into her 13-year-old son Malichi Hemphill’s room after hearing an alarmingly loud ban. The sight that awaited her was a horror that will undoubtedly haunt her forever.

Her only son lies dead on his bedroom floor. A semi-automatic pistol was still clutched in his hand as a pool of blood gathered around his immobile body, his phone still transmitting the entire ordeal over Instagram Live.

“I heard a big boom. I couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or what,” Stephens told the AJC. “We kicked in the door. We found him just laying there in a pool of blood.”

Reports indicate that Hemphill was showing the gun off tp his friends when the object accidentally went off.  The boy was immediately rushed to Grady hospital where he quickly died. There was nothing the doctors could do.

Dozens of Hemphill’s friends rushed to his home as soon as the incident unfolded.

“There were about 40 to 50 kids outside,” Stephens said. “I guess these were the kids that were watching on live that live in the area. I guess when it happened they just ran over here.”

The fact that, until the gone went off, neither Hemphill nor his audience saw any issues with Hemphill’s leisurely attitude when wielding the weapon is indicative of a larger issue.

Teenagers today are dangerously desensitized to the fatality of guns. They are too lackidasical with them, and Hemphill’s death is one example of the consequences of that attitude.

It is vital that parents instill in their children the dangers guns present, and encourage them not to take such a deadly weapon lightly.  The children who were unfortunate enough to witness their friend’s death have already learned this lesson. It is the rest of the population that needs to be made aware of this message.

We need to do all that we can to prevent future accidental suicides.
