There are many colors in the rainbow. But no many people know how to use the colors. Sir Isaac Newton invented the color wheel to show the natural progression of colors. He split white sunlight into red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, and blue beams. Newton associated each color with a note from a musical scale.  Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666.

The color wheel is meant to be a rotating disk that when spinning to the human eye all the colors combined look white.  The color wheel shows us primary colors, secondary, and tertiary colors. Primary colors are the root of all the other colors. These three colors are red, yellow, and blue, all three colors are derived from these hues. Primary colors are colors that can not be mixed or formed by any of the other combination of colors.

Your secondary colors are, green, orange, and purple. This colors come about when you mix the three primary colors.

Tertiary colors are the most complicated of them all, these colors are yellow-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green, and yellow-green. These colors happen when  primary and secondary colors are mixed together. These groups of color give us color harmony,  this is a logical structure, which delivers visual interest and a sense of order. We have this because the human brain rejects anything that is too boring or too chaotic to understand.

The last part of color theory is color context. This is the way certain colors associated with other colors. If you have a red box with a black background the red box would be more noticeable than it would be if it had an orange background. If you had a red box and each red box had a different color background like orange, black, blue and white, The red box with the black background would look would look bigger than any other boxes because of their context.
