Eleven McEachern students spent their spring break designing Vans shoes for the company’s Custom Culture competition.

According to Vans, the competition was created to “inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design and to bring attention to diminishing arts education budgets.”

The competition judges schools on how they customize blank Vans shoes around the themes of extreme sports, music, art, and local flavor.

Entrants have the chance to win $50,000 on behalf of their school’s art program and a trip to New York.

Out of the 3,000 total competition entrants, the company will choose the top 10 schools in each region partially fueled by shares of the photos received on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
