It’s often been said that Cobb County “hit a home run” when it inked the deal to make Cobb the home of the Atlanta Braves. The county scored big again last week when it was announced the state of Georgia will kick in about $42 million to help pay for 11 big-ticket transportation projects in the Cumberland/Galleria area close to the site of the team’s new stadium, SunTrust Park.

The county had asked early last month for the state Department of Transportation to help pay for $101 million worth of projects. The wish list consisted of 17 projects designed to improve mobility throughout the county, including road improvements, wayfinding signage and pedestrian trails.

The list was submitted to GDOT Aug. 13 and the state responded a short three weeks later — a testament to the urgency placed on alleviating Cobb congestion.
